Facade mouldings: guide and advice on enhancing facades

Through a play of reliefs, materials, and colours, mouldings enhance facades in line with the designer’s creativity. Facade mouldings refer to a set of elements that make up the decorative features of an exterior facade. Their installation is carried out prior to the finishing work.

In this guide, discover how to create facade mouldings—from their components (copings, friezes, capitals, etc.) to their implementation—so as to achieve a decorative result that meets your expectations.

Application

First solution: moulded profiles

  1. Prepare the installation of the profiles

    • Mark the positions on the architectural facade to achieve a uniform moulding layout.
    • Cut each profile to the required dimensions.
    • Apply an even layer of adhesive to the back of the profiles using a notched trowel.
  2. Install the profiles

    • Position each profile and press firmly.
    • Unroll the reinforcing mesh and embed it into the selected render or into webertherm PPE
    • Note that moulded profiles are available in 9 models for window surrounds and string courses.

Second solution: layout design using organic finishing renders

  1. Apply the base coat and mark out the layout

    • Apply a coat of weber régulateur
    • Mark out the layout on the facades.
    • Protect the joints with adhesive tape (this is an important step for decorative treatment).
  2. Apply the finishing render

    • Apply the selected organic finishing render, then remove the adhesive strips before the render has fully dried.

Third solution: decorative finish using thick mineral renders, such as recessed joints.

  1. Apply the render and transfer the layout

    • Apply the render and create a scraped or floated finish
    • Transfer the joint layout using an ochre chalk line
  2. Form the recessed joint

    • Adjust the strip tools according to the desired joint width.
    • Form the joint while respecting the minimum back-of-joint thickness:
      • 10 mm for waterproofing renders
      • 5 mm for decorative renders
    • Ensure the maximum joint depth does not exceed 10 mm.
    • Note that facade moulding must be carried out carefully, as it directly affects the final appearance and quality of your decorative features.
