Restoring Stone Facades: Weber Mortars and Techniques

Over time, the joints in stone rubble masonry deteriorate, allowing water to penetrate the walls.

Common issues and queries you can face

For exposed stone facades, use a mortar suited to the hardness of the stones or rubble masonry, with good adhesion.

Water Infiltration

On exposed stone facades, slow down rainwater penetration at the joints by using a suitable mortar. This ensures the watertightness of the substrate.

Substrate Preparation

  1. Check and rake out the joints

    • Check that the joints are not made of gypsum or gypsum-lime mortar
    • Rake out the masonry joints to a depth of 1 to 3 cm and remove any deteriorated stones
  2. Clean the stones

    • Brush to remove any powdery residues.
    • Clean using sandblasting or wet sandblasting.
  3. Replace any missing stones and dampen the joints

    • Replace missing stones by sealing them with the selected mortar; allow at least 2 days for curing
    • Thoroughly dampen the joints the day before application until fully saturated

Application

  1. Apply the facing render manually

  2. Apply the facing render using a machine

  3. Clean the joints and the stones

    • After a few hours of drying, brush the joints with a stiff bristle brush or scrape them with the edge of a trowel
    • Clean the stones or rubble masonry using a wire brush

Our recommendations

  • In the case of exposed stone render, apply a coat of render levelled to the most protruding stones. Then, while the render is still fresh, lightly expose the stones using a stiff bristle brush.
  • Important : only frost-resistant stones can be left exposed.
  • Refer to the product instructions for full details on their scope of use.
